FAQ

Does a plumber in Ontario need a licence?

Yes. Plumber 306A is a compulsory trade in Ontario. Anyone doing the work for pay must hold a Certificate of Qualification, a provisional certificate or a registered apprenticeship, listed on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register.

Do I need a permit to replace my toilet or faucet?

Usually not, if it goes in the same spot. Adding or moving fixtures, or changing drain, vent or supply piping, usually needs a City of Ottawa permit. We tell you before the job starts.

Is Ottawa water hard? Do I need a softener?

City water is soft, about 30 mg/L according to the City of Ottawa, so most city homes do not need a softener. Homes on wells, including many around Manotick, can have 200 to 350 mg/L or more, and a softener often makes sense there.

Should I get a tank or a tankless water heater?

A tank costs less up front and is quick to replace. Tankless saves space and never runs out, but costs more to install and needs yearly maintenance. For a family with a big soaker tub, the gas line size and venting decide what is possible.

What does an emergency call cost?

In 2026, expect roughly $150 to $300 for the first hour on an after-hours call, plus parts. You get the rate on the phone before anyone drives out.
